Before surgery, or the pre-operative period, there are several steps that take place to prepare the patient for the procedure. Some of these include:

  1. Scheduling the surgery: This involves coordinating with the hospital or surgery center and the patient's surgeon

  2. Pre-admission testing: The patient may need to undergo certain tests, such as blood work or imaging scans, to determine their fitness for surgery.

  3. Informed consent: The patient will need to sign a document indicating that they understand the risks and benefits of the surgery, and that they consent to the procedure.

  4. Pre-operative instructions: The patient may be given instructions on how to prepare for surgery, such as fasting or avoiding certain medications.

After the surgery, or the post-operative period, there are several steps that take place to help the patient recover and manage any pain or discomfort. These may include:

  1. Recovery room: The patient will be taken to a recovery room after the surgery, where they will be monitored by medical staff.

  2. Pain management: The patient will be given medication to manage pain and discomfort.

  3. Discharge instructions: The patient will be given instructions on how to care for themselves at home, including any medications or follow-up appointments.

There are several members of the surgical team, each with their own specific role. Some of the main players include:

  1. Surgeon: The surgeon is the lead medical professional who is responsible for performing the surgery.

  2. Anesthesiologist: The anesthesiologist is responsible for administering the anesthesia and managing the patient's pain during the surgery.

  3. Nurses: Nurses assist the surgeon and anesthesiologist during the surgery and provide care to the patient following the procedure.

  4. Surgical technologists: Surgical technologists are responsible for preparing the operating room and setting up the necessary equipment and instruments.

  5. Operating room assistant: The operating room assistant helps the surgeon and other members of the surgical team during the procedure.

  6. Scrub nurse: The scrub nurse is responsible for sterilizing the instruments and handing them to the surgeon during the surgery.
