Medical Laboratory Technicians are important members of the medical field, assisting with a variety of tests and procedures, which could help care for a patient. These laboratory tests performed by these individuals help diagnose, treat, and even prevent certain issues from arising. You will typically see this specific specialist in medical laboratories, hospitals, clinics, and research facilities.

So, what does the education of these medical specialists look like? Well, first they need to graduate from highschool. Following that, they need to enroll in an accredited MLT Program, which typically lasts 1-2 years. When completing this program, the individuals get their associates degree. While in this program these students will take part in both classroom instruction and hands-on training. In this program students will take medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology, hematology, and laboratory management. Like I said above, their hands-on training occurs at the same time, and they will usually do clinical rotations in hospitals, clinics, or diagnostic laboratories. They get to practice their skills, and perform real tests. This last part depends on each state. It is encouraged to obtain their professional certification. The American Society for Clinical Pathology offers the Medical Laboratory Technician certification, which requires passing an exam based on knowledge and skills in the field.
