For the last few weeks, we have seen how the medical field has advanced since the 19th century, and what it is like now. In the 19th century medicine was a new concept that was just starting to become developed and used throughout the Civil War. Doctors and surgeons of the time were not trained as well as the doctors and surgeons of today. In fact, they didn’t even know the science behind what they were doing. During this time training was also less vigorous.
Since then, medicine has transformed significantly. Now, allopathic medicine, osteopathic medicine, and homeopathic medicine are all forms of medicine that are licensed in the United States today. Each of these have their own ways of treating patients, and they require different education pathways.
Following the 19th century, medical school has changed. Medical school now consists of four years, followed by residency, which depends on the field you are going to practice. It will most definitely be a rough four years, but it will be worth it in the end. But, if being a doctor isn’t for you, that is okay as there are many job opportunities within this field.
Finally, as we discussed earlier, there are many aspects to consider before taking part in this field, as your life will never be the same. You may have less free time and less time to travel or spend time with family and friends. Also, not everyone enjoys the same work environment, so you will need to figure out where you will be happy working.
Next week we will begin talking about surgery, and who is important during the procedure!
