Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a PCP and and Internist is? Many people get the two specialties confused. Typically, an internist can serve the function of a PCP, but the opposite is usually not the case.

A primary care physician is a medical doctor who provides routine check-ups, preventive care, and treatment for acute and chronic illnesses. Sometimes they work alongside other specialists to ensure the pateint is being treated properly.

On the other hand, an internist, also known as an internal medicine physician, is a doctor who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. Internists focus on the internal organs and systems of the body, such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, and digestive system. They are often called upon to assess compliacted medical cases that may involve multiple health conditions. They often also work with specialists in other medical fields.

While both primary care physicians and internists provide medical care to adult patients, internists have specialized training in diagnosing and managing complex medical conditions in adults. They are usally able to handle more difficult cases.
